MSU Flute Audition Guidelines and Videos

Audition Dates for Prospective Freshmen, Transfer, and Graduate Students

We have openings and generous scholarships for flutists pursuing undergraduate music majors and a variety of graduate assistantships for flutists pursuing graduate study. 

New Music Student Checklist
  • Apply to MSU 
  • Schedule a free flute lesson with Dr. Mosley on campus (optional)
  • Apply for admission into one of our music programs by filling out the Music Admission and Scholarship Application. You will also schedule your music audition during this time.

Suggested Materials for Flute Scholarship Auditions at MSU
The Flute Audition Will Consist of the Following: 
  1. Major Scales in all 12 keys, 2-3 octaves. Three or four scales will be chosen by faculty panel at the audition. 
  2. Chromatic Scale from low C to high C, or a demonstration of the student’s lowest to highest range.
  3. Prepared Solo Materials*
  4. Sightreading - music is selected by the faculty panel.
  5. Prepared Etude Material (optional) - Choose one study from the collections: Anderson, Berbigiuier, or Genzmer OR the KMEA All-State Audition Materials
  6. Brief Question and Answer Session for you to get to know the faculty.
*Prepared Solo Materials, select one work from both groups listed below. If you have not prepared music from these lists please contact Dr. Mosley to determine if your solo(s) material is satisfactory for your audition. Flute music is available for purchase at Flutistry, Fluteworld, and Carolyn Nussbaum Music. Schedule a free consultation with Dr. Mosley on campus or via Skype if you would like more information in advance of your audition. 
Recommended Solo Materials (without piano accompaniment):
  1. Any flute work, two contrasting movements by Bach, J.S., Blavet, Handel, G.F., Mozart, W.A., Quantz, J.J., Stamitz, K.P.
  2. Godard, B. Suite, Op. 166, 1st and 2nd movements; Chaminade, Concertino; Doppler, F. Hungarian Pastorale Fantasie;Fauré, G. Fantasie; Hindeminth, P. Sonata for Flute and Piano, two contrasting movements; Hue, G. Fantasie; Poulenc, F. Sonata, two contrasting movements​
Recommended Flute Videos:
If you are new to exploring flutists on youtube, there are many great artists putting work online. I recommend starting with Karl-Heinz Schutz, Emmanuel Pahud, Carlos Feller, Denis Bouriakov, Marianne Gedigian, and branching out from there. Here are a few to help you get started and select pieces for your audition.
